ADVOCATES FOR ANTI-RACISM IN LIFE SCIENCES

AARLS

Home: Text

OUR MISSION

Advocates for Anti-Racism in Life Sciences (AARLS) was formed in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and in response to the history of systemic racism within academia. We are committed to recognizing, addressing and eradicating racism against Black, Indigenous, and non-Black people of color (BIPoC and NBPoC) in the life sciences at the University of Georgia.

Using a combination of published, anecdotal, and experiential data, AARLS identifies factors preventing BIPoC and NBPoC from entering or being retained in the life sciences. We work to create a welcoming environment for academics of color, increase BIPoC and NBPoC representation in all sectors of academia, and encourage mentorship of students of color. We serve as a liaison and resource hub for the members of our community by partnering with and amplifying the work of existing organizations and nurturing the next generation of anti-racist advocates.

MISTREATMENT OF, AND EXCLUSIONARY PRACTICES AGAINST, ACADEMICS OF COLOR

PERPETUATION OF CULTURAL RACISM INHERENT TO THE HISTORY OF STEM

OBSTRUCTION OF ACCESS TO COLLEGIATE AND GRADUATE EDUCATION AS A RESULT OF SYSTEMIC RACISM

LACK OF SUBSTANCE IN “DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY” INITIATIVES ALREADY IN PLACE AT UGA
